Woodley United took a well deserved three points on Tuesday night with a performance that defied the Kestrels ‘bottom of the table’ status.
Jordan Blake’s side beat Langley 3-1 at the Rivermoor but it could have been very different after a mix up between Woodley ‘keeper Jo Hill and his defender allowed Langley a seemingly golden opportunity from eight yards out.
Somehow defender and goalkeeper combined to knick the ball away when it seemed the easiest of opportunities, leaving the attacker on the deck. Claims for a penalty were waved away but it could so easily have been given.
Shortly after Ty Moorcroft got his shooting boots out to make it 1-0 to Woodley who went in at half time ahead.
Langley play out from the back and are very controlled, but a cold night at The Rivermoor against a side with their tails up neutered the Slough sides attack.
Moorcroft was again the recipient of Woodley’s next opportunity in the second half to make it 2-0 and even after he was dismissed for the Kestrels for a second yellow card, there was really only one team in it.
George Day stepped up and took his chance to make it 3-0 and settle any nerves, a loose ball across the edge of the box saw him free to arrow the ball past the goalkeeper.
If Woodley were feeling edgy at all it didn’t show. Balls were cleared and chased and a defensive solidity took hold. Langley did have the ball in the back of the net before full time to make it 3-1 but frantic cries to get the game going again fell on deaf ears as the referee blew for full time shortly after.
Woodley’s landlords Reading City pulled off a decent result themselves, drawing 2-2 with promotion chasing Amersham Town while Binfield and striker Mitch Parker beat Hartley Wintney 2-0 and Maidenhead United issued another Devonshiring, this time a 1-0 away win at Oldham Athletic.
