Holyport squeeze through in FA Vase and Ascot United join them after ‘overseas’ trip

Brendan Matthews on target for Ascot as Port win through on penalties

Holyport and Ascot United both made it through to the FA Vase Second Round on Saturday as a number of Berkshire sides fell.

Joining them were Wallingford & Crowmarsh but there was disappointment for the likes of Berks County, Tadley Calleva, Eversley & California who all crashed out at the First Round stage.

Brendan Matthews got Ascot’s goal as the Yellamen won on the Isle of Wight, beating Newport 1-0 while it was the lottery of penalties that sealed Holyport’s passage in Kent after a 0-0 draw with Lydd Town. Sam Lock’s side went on to win 5-4 on spot-kicks.

Tadley weren’t so fortunate on penalties, losing 4-2 to Guildford City after Ben Wright’s second-half goal had given them a 1-0 lead, only for the Barlows Park visitors to level late on when it seemed a solitary goal would be enough.

An entertaining game for Wallingford though eho we’re behind at various points including 1-0 and 3-2 but fought back through two goals from Ty Hamilton as well as strikes from Lawrie Aitchison and Brad Walton to win 4-3.
