Hungerford Town fashioned a strong and professional comeback away to St Albans City in the Vanarama National League South on Saturday, heading home as 3-1 winners.
The result pushed the Crusaders into a strong play-off position, currently sitting 5th place.
The visitors got off to a shaky start in the 13th minute when St Albans were awarded a penalty. The St Albans attacker got the wrong side of the defender on the by-line where he was tripped resulting in the spot-kick which was converted by the man who won it, Shaun Jeffers.
It was hardly convincing as Hungerford keeper Luke Cairney got a hand to the ball but he could only help it into the corner. Hungerford got their equaliser 35 minutes in when Callum Willmoth played the ball into the path of Rhys Tyler on the right side just inside the box who cut it back to the arriving Seager on the penalty spot to place it home, Seager’s 13th this season and it would stay like this into the half time break.
Hungerford came out the gates with intensity and purpose in the second half and got their reward just five minutes in when a low cross from Curtis Angell was cleared only as far as Jake Evans who flicked the ball up and hit a sumptuous volley from 20 yards out leaving on loan Reading goalkeeper Coniah Boyce-Clark no chance, one that will certainly be a contender for goal of the season.
Hungerford didn’t slow down as just two minutes later George Smith was slid clean through on goal and smashed it into the top of the net to put it past the on-rushing keeper giving the away side a cushion with just over half an hour to play.
Maidenhead United suffer a heavy defeat on the road and Slough Town lose out to Eastbourne Borough
Maidenhead United suffered a 4-0 away loss to promotion hopefuls Boreham Wood.
The Magpies still sit just outside the relegation places in 19th with a four-point gap. The pick of the goals in this game was Boreham Wood’s fourth scored by Jacob Mendy who picked the ball up deep in the Maidenhead half, cut inside of one defender and hit a strike from 20 yards. There did seem to be a slight deflection taking it away from the keeper but it can’t take away from Mendy’s effort.
Scott Boden also scored a brace for the home side who just had too much for Maidenhead.
Elsewhere, Slough suffered a 3-1 defeat away to Eastbourne Borough with Charley Kendall proving to be the thorn in the side, with a hat-trick. Ben Harris added a consolation for the Rebels late on.
The Slough goal was a quick move down the right-hand side where a cross was delivered to the arriving Harris who poked it home into the bottom corner.
