On Friday evening at Bracknell Town’s Larges Lane it was Finchampstead Athletic Sunday who won out a keenly fought cup final. Their opponents FC Fernhill are previous winners of the competition having won it in 2013, 2015 and 2018.
Despite a 3-1 scoreline the game was a much closer affair. Fernhill, playing in all yellow, took the lead. However, just before half-time a quickfire double from Finchampstead saw the red and blacks in the lead at half-time.
The game continued to be a very even contest as the second half wore on, and it was only a moment of brilliance from Finchampstead’s unmistakable number seven Gareth Ainsworth that put two goals between them and Fernhill.
Ainsworth, the Wycombe Wanderers boss, was described in the programme as “An absolute gent. Still has so much love for the game and shows moments of brilliance at the age of 46!”
After Finch secured their two goal cushion their attacking intentions dimmed and Fernhill dominated most of the latter stages of the match. There was time for some real Hail Marys from Fernhill and some close shaves for Finch, but in the end Finchampstead saw the game out for a victory.
There was still time before the end of the match for a red card for a Fernhill player after a second yellow (presumably for dissent). However it was ultimately Finch, and their 46 year old talisman Gareth Ainsworth, who lifted the Cup.
