Simone O’Brien is up for a Berkshire Football Award in the category of Player of the Season (Female).

The nomination we received for the award said: “Simone O’Brien is the very embodiment of triumph in adversity. Having suffered a cruel leg break in 2022/23 for the second time in as many years, Simone has battled back to fitness and – having turned 30 this season – is playing some of her best football for Maidenhead United Women.

“At the time of writing, the pacy and skillful forward has thirteen goals for the campaign and has already broken the scoring record for Maidenhead United Women in a FAWNL campaign in a side which has also set new club record FAWNL points and goals tally. The team also made further club history with a run to the Second Round of the Women’s FA Cup for the first time ever, O’Brien scoring crucial goals in victories against Richmond & Kew and Sutton United during that memorable run.

“When not scoring Simone is creating – she has an impressive 13 assists this season. She is also an excellent mentor to the younger players in Ed Jackson-Norris’s promising team, developing a particularly fruitful understanding with fellow forwards Izzy Stockton and Macey-Nikiah Walters.

“Like any top-quality footballer should be, Simone is a role model who is happy to pass on her experience and expertise to others. Simone has inaugurated women’s walking football sessions at Maidenhead United FC and these sessions have grown to the extent that for the first time ever this season MUFC were able to field a women’s walking football team in the Thames Valley Walking Football League. And what a success they have been under the influence of Simone – winning two of their first round of four fixtures.”
