It may only be February, but the Thames Valley Premier League title race is already over as Yateley United stormed to the title with four games to go.

It has been a flawless season so far for Yateley who hope to have their application for promotion to Step 6 approved in May. The North Hampshire side have won all 16 of their TVPL fixtures so far this season and capped off their title win with a 4-3 win over Burghfield at Sean Devereux Park.

The title win ends two seasons of dominance by Finchampstead who are battling it out with Burghfield and Reading YMCA for the runners up spot.

Because of the way promotion from Step 7 works in English football, clubs have to apply for promotion to the FA which Yateley have done for the last two seasons. In theory, a team doesn’t need to win the TVPL to earn promotion – Berks County and AFC Aldermaston are recent examples of that quirk.

Yateley though this time around will be boosted in their bid to go up by their new facilities at Sean Devereux Park which were officially opened by Tottenham Hotspur and Argentina legend Ossie Ardiles.

Yateley are the latest Football in Berkshire to win a league title this season following in the footsteps of Woodley United Ladies who recently lifted the Southern Region Women’s Football League Division One North title.
