The 2022/23 FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round results on Saturday threw up a couple of surprise results and saw two sides make club history.
Cherry Red Records Combined Counties League Premier Division North sides Virginia Water and Holyport both won FA Cup ties for the first time in their respective histories.
Virginia Water defeated new Step 5 side Hilltop 1-0 thanks to a strike by Adam McNamara, a strike – which as discussed in this weeks talking points piece – gave the side their first ever FA Cup win in four attempts.
What this weeks talking points didn’t know at the time of writing, was that Holyport’s 1-0 win away at Risborough Rangers was also a first ever win.
The Port have played nine FA Cup ties since their first entry in the 2010/11 season and lost all eight until Ashley Hunt’s 37th minute goal lifted the curse.
For the record, Waters have played Extra Preliminary Round ties since 2019, losing to AFC Croydon Athletic, Spelthorne Sports and Athletic Newham.
Holyport’s record goes back to 2010 with defeats to East Grinstead Town, Wokingham & Emmbrook, Ardley United, Hanworth Villa, Abingdon United (who they did take to a replay), Milton United, Brimscombe & Thrupp and most recently Ascot United before they final got the W against Risborough.
Congratulations to both sides and good luck in the FA Cup Preliminary Round.
