AFC Aldermaston captain and goalkeeper Dan Smith has announced his retirement from football after a stellar season for the Atomics in their first season back at step 6.
Smith had a varied career playing for a number of Berkshire sides but started out with Aldermaston as a left winger with an eye for goal.
The Atomics website report on Smith’s retirement states: ‘The left footer was quick and had talent to score goals which Fareham Town will remember quite fondly after the leggy winger scored four against them in one match.’
After leaving Aldermaston, Smith played in goal for Bracknell Town under former Tottenham Hotspur centre back David Tuttle, Highmoor-IBIS, Bracknell again and Woodley United before returning to the Atomics for their promotion season and this past term in Division 1 East.
Smith was highly regarded in his second spell at Larges Lane, particularly by supporters at the club under managers Steve Nebbett and Danny Oliphant but was let go when new boss Ed Carpenter took over at the start of the 2014/15 season.
The goalkeeper – who’s final game is on Easter Monday when the Atomics travel to Chalfont Wasps has had a terrific season and was captured on camera back in January pulling off a penalty save at Abingdon United.
We’d like to wish Dan a happy footballing retirement!
