Newbury FC will find out their opponents for the 2023/24 season on Tuesday evening as the Thames Valley Premier League AGM is held.
The Hellenic Division 2 East champions will move to the Thames Valley Premier League in a bid to return to Step 6 football and beyond.
Newbury teased supporters on their Twitter on Tuesday with the promise of announcements, not only from the AGM but also in developments off the pitch which Football in Berkshire understand will assist in their bid to move up the non-league pyramid.
Ahead of the new season, we caught up with assistant manager Ben Wickens to gain his perspective on off field proceedings prior to the new season.
DW: It is not yet known what league within the TVPL set up you will be competing in next season, do you expect to be playing in the premier divison?
BW: The Premier Division is our target, and with the squad we have we are confident we can compete at the top of the table. This was proven from a couple of cup games last season.
DW: With plans on a return to Faraday Road, has this enhanced plans for the club to reach Step 6?
BW: Yes. For the first time in four or five years, getting the club back to Step 6 is on everyones mind, and alot is being done behind the scenes to put the foundations in place for us to do so. We know the requirements can be challenging for alot of clubs which has resulted in alot of ground shares, but we are confident that we can start from scratch and bring football back to Faraday Road.
DW: What can you share about plans off the field?
BW: We are in talks with Newbury Football Community Group and the local council who are key in getting us (Newbury Town FC) back to Faraday Road. We are also in the process of becoming a FA Charter Standard club.
DW: With all the ongoing work both on and off the pitch, can you emulate last years successes?
BW: If we can keep the squad together it will be a real advantage. There are a few players that could jump to Step 6 at least so keeping hold of them will definitely help, i’m all for pushing them to the highest level they can play so if they have the opportunity to move up, they will have my full support.
Thames Valley Premier League constitutions will be announced following the conclusion of the AGM this evening with Football in Berkshire bringing you up to date with the outcome as it happens.
