Pitching In Isthmian League South Central Division One side Thatcham Town have launched an audacious bid to bring Charlie Austin ‘home’ to West Berkshire.
The Hungerford-born 33-year-old is leaving his Australian A-League side Brisbane Roar after six months and the West Berkshire native has no shortage of suitors, including Yashwa Romeo’s Kingfishers.
Replying to a tweet by Austin, the Kingfishers wrote: “Hey Charlie Austin fancy coming back to Thatcham Town, we could do with a big forward up top.”
Of course the move is somewhat tongue in cheek but just imagine.. he’s certainly played for Thatcham before.
Austin of course is well-known in the western part of his home county and has attended Hungerford games in the past. He played Allied Counties Youth League football for his home-town side and turned out at senior level for the Crusaders and Thatcham as well as Poole Town, before a move into the Football League with Swindon Town.
The former QPR striker is attracting the attention of his former club Swindon and undoubtedly will have a number of offers coming his way.
Whether Thatcham’s swoop is successful or not, you can’t blame a club for trying.
