Burghfield lifted the Berks & Bucks Charles Twelftree County Cup on Tuesday night with a 2-0 win over Maidenhead Town.

The Fielders lead after 10 minutes through Sam Guze, latching on to a delicious through ball in front of 333 supporters at Slough Town.

The opening goal crowned a blistering opening 10 for Burghfield who had shot out of the starting gate.

Maidenhead then came back into the game but were unable to make their period of control count.

However, it could well have been 2-0 before half time after a mix-up between Maidenhead’s goalkeeper and defender saw the ball heading goalwards under a terrific last-ditch clearance by Town’s number 8.

Burghfield were certainly value for their lead, the big question was could they continue their athletic pressing game for the 90 minutes – you certainly felt that tiredness would be a factor in the game after the break.

As it was, Maidenhead unsurprisingly flew out of the blocks themselves in the second half but were again unable to make that period count.

The game became pretty end to end but it was the introduction of Tom McClellan on the hour for Teddy Thomas that ultimately tipped the balance of the tie in the West Berkshire sides favour.

A menace up front, McClellan latched onto a ball in the centre of the park but looked to have to much work to do in front of the defender to fashion a chance, however a little boost of pace from fresh legs found him on the edge of the ‘D’ and he powered a shot home to beat the goalkeeper.

The goal settled the tie – and there was still time for a brief cameo from Lewis Butcher for the Fielders, subbed on and then limping off – and calmed a nervy Burghfield section of supporters inside Arbour Park, which erupted as the final whistle blew.

A few minutes later captain James McClellan and his team mates got their hands on the Charles Twelftree Trophy for the first time in the clubs history.
