West Berkshire side Burghfield will once again represent the county in the FA Sunday Cup.

The Reading & District Sunday League side have been accepted in to the competition for the second season in succession having been one of three Berks & Bucks County FA sides that competed last year.

The competition, which was founded in 1964, offers one Sunday League side the opportunity to be crowned ‘England’s best’, something a legendary Theale side achieved in front of 4,000 people at Elm Park in 1992.

Last season, Burghfield reached the FA Sunday Cup last 16, beating Singh Sabha Slough and Banstead Rovers in games at Burnham FC before losing out to eventual finalists Highgate Albion from Barnet. The competition was eventually won by East London side Baiteze who defeated Highgate 2-0 at Millwall’s New Den.

A statement on the Burghfield club website said: “After making our debut in the country’s biggest national Sunday League knockout tournament last season, we are pleased to confirm that we will once again be entered into the competition for the 2022/23 season.

“Last season we made it through to the last 16 of the tournament before suffering defeat to eventual runners-up, Highgate Albion. The current cup holders are Baiteze of the Essex Corinthian Sunday League.”

A total of 86 clubs have been accepted into this season’s competition, with the first round draw set to be made on Friday 9th September, with games scheduled to be played on Sunday 9th October.
