Bracknell Town’s Max Herbert joins Basingstoke Town

The now ex-Robins midfielder has joined the Hampshire sides bid to avoid relegation from the Southern League Premier Division after departing Bracknell

Southern League Premier Division South Basingstoke Town have snapped up Bracknell Town midfielder Max Herbert.

The former Bracknell Town captain’s departure from Bottom Meadow was announced on Thursday, and the Stoke have moved quickly to sign him up as they battle for survival in the division.

Basingstoke are two points clear of the drop zone, level on 36 points with Hungerford Town and Herbert will be in line to make his debut on Saturday at home to Dorchester Town.

A brief social media statement from the Hampshire side said: “Basingstoke Town FC are pleased to confirm the signing of experienced midfielder Max Herbert from Bracknell Town, adding a composed and influential presence to the heart of the midfield.”

On Thursday evening, Herbert himself released a statement on his departure from the Robins after eight seasons: “I’ve spent nearly a third of my life here so it’s hard to sum up what this club means to me. Promotion, play-offs and FA Cup appearances aside, the club has felt like an extension of my family. I’ve met so many great people here, fans included, and plenty will remain in my life forever.

“I feel it’s important to be transparent with the fanbase, and that finances haven’t come into my decision one bit.

“I’ve had a few chances to leave over the last few years but I’ve always stayed. What made up my mind is the way certain player/staff situations – people that helped build the club – have been handled, and the direction the club is headed in. I hope things change because Carl and Sean are brilliant.

“I didn’t envisage it ending like this, but I don’t want to leave on a sour note. So I’m leaving with a heavy heart, but full of great memories. Robins forever.”

Bracknell Town meanwhile host Gosport Borough on Saturday with Assistant Manager Sean Miles urging supporters to get behind the team with the visitors having an outside chance of the play-offs. He wrote on Twitter: “There are 16 lads that need you bringing the noise tomorrow. Let’s create a proper atmosphere and have a positive day with each other.”
