Holyport are making a fight of the relegation scrap in Combined Counties League Premier Division South after registering back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
Crucially, Lee Ovens and Dan Rapley’s side have beaten teams around them in the division in Abingdon United on Tuesday night (3-0) and bottom side Edgware & Kingsbury (2-1). UPDATE: Holyport picked up another point on Tuesday night with a 1-1 draw at home to Milton United.
The duo are in their first season of management with Holyport, a club they both represented during their careers and may also benefit from the fixture pile-up that is engulfing their relegation rivals.
You might ordinarily look at having played five games (Holyport have played 30 league games this season) more than the sides around you as a negative when the gap to the drop zone is just four points.

The likes of Amersham Town and North Leigh each have five games in hand while British Airways have only played 22 and have three point deduction.
Amersham haven’t won for 14 matches while North Leigh have one win in the same number of fixtures. Both teams face a fixture headache and likely three games a week as the season draws to a close while Holyport have a bit more breathing room, and crucially, are winning games.
Around the grounds
Maidenhead United are four games unbeaten and very much in the National League South play-off hunt after goals from Josh Umerah and Liam Dulson gave the Magpies a 2-0 win at home to Dagenham & Redbridge.
Hungerford Town built on the previous weekends 1-0 win over leaders Walton & Hersham with a 2-2 draw against strugglers Taunton Town, while Bracknell Town were beaten 3-0 at Hanwell Town.
Ascot United have work to do to avoid the drop back to the Combined Counties League. The Yellas dropped into the Isthmian League South Central Division One relegation zone on Saturday following a 4-1 defeat at Westfield. The division is in slightly ludicrous shape though with the gap between 19th (the last relegation spot) and ninth, just seven points.
Wallingford & Crowmarsh boosted their play-off credentials with a 3-0 win at Virginia Water while Connor Richardson scored the only goal of the game after four minutes for Wokingham Town as they beat Harefield United 1-0.
We’ve talked a lot about Woodley United’s possible title challenge in CCL Division One, but what about Berks County’s play-off credentials? 10 goals in the last two games including a 6-0 win against Rising Ballers Kensington on Saturday. Brook House next up..
