‘They deserve more’ says ex-Reading FC boss

Reading beat Durham 1-0 at the weekend to secure their position for 2024/25

Former Reading FC Women manager Kelly Cousins (nee Chambers) has spoken out following the Royals 1-0 win over Durham that secured FA Women’s Championship status.

Cousins, now Sporting Director at Utah Royals in the National Women’s Soccer League in America, was the mastermind behind Reading’s ascent to the FA Women’s Super League and brought through England’s Euro 2021 winning midfield sensation Fran Kirby.

Cousins kept Reading challenging in the top tier of English football for eight seasons until relegation at the end of the 2022/23 season.

Cousin’s wrote on social media following the win that ensures safety and Academy status with a game to spare: “YES!!! I’m so incredibly proud of this group, it’s been tough watching from afar. For everything they have been through and to see them stay in Women’s Championship is a huge achievement! Let’s hope they get more support next season! THEY DESERVE MORE!!

Cousin’s also commented on one of her former player’s posts – Becky Jane – now a coach with the Royals: “Well done Becks! It’s so nice to see and hear how well your are doing too!! I love this!!
