It may have been curtailed, but for Reading City, the 2019/20 season was a positive one for the club and manager Simon Johnson.

The young boss took charge midway through the 2018/19 season and ensured the club maintained its step 5 status in the Uhlsport Hellenic Premier Division and this season saw his side kick on and were tenth before the competition was curtailed.

Now, Johnson has been nominated for a Berkshire Football Award in the category of Manager of the Season.

The nomination we received said: “Simon took over at Reading City with the club in the worst state it had been for many years. After somehow keeping them afloat in the Hellenic League by 3 points, he built a squad and coaching team capable of taking on all of the big names in the league. When the season was halted the club had overtaken the previous season’s total of 31 points with 12 games left to play, as well as being in 10th place which would have been the club’s best league finish for 5 years. All of this on one of the lowest budgets in the league.”

This extended close season, Johnson has appeared on the Berkshire Football Stories podcast which you can listen to here, while club chairman Martin Law has also been on the podcast, you can listen to that here.
