The news of the sad passing of one of England’s greatest strikers, Jimmy Greaves, at the weekend has had a lot of people looking back through their footballing ephemera for links to the former Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea striker.
A number of readers contacted Football in Berkshire on Sunday and Monday to highlight two matches in particular that Greaves played in Berkshire during the 1978/79 FA Cup for Barnet and our own Steve Gabb wrote up a lovely piece about the ties from newspaper cuttings.
Greaves featured for Barnet in that season’s competition, playing against Bracknell Town in the First Qualifying Round and Wokingham Town in the Third Qualifying Round. Barnet – then a Southern League Premier Division side went on to beat Edgware Town 1-0 and take Woking to two replays in the First Round before losing 3-0.
One reader of Wokingham Today, Chris Hillebrandt, actually had a copy of the programme from the Wokingham match and shared it with us. You can see the full programme page by page below.
