#FIBKNOWLEDGE: Meet Berkshire’s longest-serving player

The latest in our general Berkshire football knowledge series

In this weeks knowledge column, we’re looking for the player with the longest-serving senior career at a Berkshire club.

We came up initially with Ben Edwards who was awarded a testimonial after 10 years representing Bracknell Town, but plenty of you came up with impressive suggestions of your own.

Of course, we really were looking for unbroken spells, but it’s hard to argue with Carl Withers – now the Binfield co-manager – and his 600 appearances for the Moles. Unfortunately, the run was broken by spells away from Hill Farm Lane with Flackwell Heath and Bracknell Town.

Lee Ovens has made 300 appearances for Holyport over 11 seasons and was recently rewarded by the club prior to his third century.

At Thatcham Town, Tom Melledew made it 10 years with the Kingfishers and lifted both the FA Vase and Hellenic League title as captain of the side.

The big hitters, and the one’s to beat though are, it would appear, midfielder Terry Reardon who played 14 seasons for Slough Town between 1964 and 1981 with 90 goals in 475 appearances. There’s a full profile of Reardon here on the Slough Town website.

The winner though, unless anyone knows better, would be Thames Valley Premier League Reading YMCA’s Steve Woodrow who has made over 600 appearances since his debut in 1992, and is still going.

Football in Berkshire’s women’s football correspondent Abi Ticehurst was heard to mutter: “So Steve Woodrow has been playing for Reading YMCA for as long as I’ve been alive!”
