A former Bracknell & District Sunday League midfielder has been linked with a vacant managerial position at EFL Championship side Preston North End, it has been revealed.
Gareth Ainsworth, previously a marauding match winner for Finchampstead Athletic Sunday, is rumoured to be in the running the top job in the dugout at the Lancashire club.
The midfielder famously scored a free-kick in the 2019 Senior Cup Final to give Finch a 3-1 win over league champions FC Fernhill.
Of course, we all really know Gareth as the manager of Championship side Wycombe Wanderers where he holds the record as the longest serving manager in the Football League and led the Chairboys to the English Football Pyramid’s second tier via the play-offs in the summer.
Blackburn born Ainsworth began his career with Preston making over 100 appearances for the club.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, he said: “I’ve always said it’d take something super special for me to vacate Wycombe – where we’ve built this culture with what we are doing so far.
“So yeah, unfortunately there will be no comment from me tonight, but thank you to all the fans concerned at both clubs.”
Football in Berkshire was fortunate enough to sit down with Gareth during lockdown one and record a podcast which you can listen to below, or get it on your favourite podcast app here.
