I’ve been to Reading City’s Rivermoor Stadium several times on my wanderings over the last couple of years and one thing remains constant, the food there is always top quality. On previous visits I’ve always enjoyed their 6oz steak burger (see menu) but this time I was there to try something a little different, their Chinese Selection Box, which you may have seen make quite a splash on social media over the last year or so!

As you’re probably aware, there has been somewhat of a food revolution over the past few years in non-league, with clubs vying to outdo each other for the biggest burgers etc, all the while hoping their creations will get picked up by Footy Scran on social media and broadcast to the footballing world. The Chinese selection box at Reading City has its own story as it started out as a joke Facebook post from a friend of the manager which then became reality, and went on to become a viral internet sensation.

The box itself contains a Thai chicken curry, noodles, chicken strips (mine had a sliced chicken breast as they didn’t have the strips), sweet & sour chicken balls and spring rolls served with a wicked little container of chilli sauce. The curry hit a sweet spot for me, not too spicy but just with enough of a kick, the killer for me though was the chilli sauce which was fantastic and all of the strips, spring rolls and chicken balls received a healthy dunking in that!

All I can say is that you won’t be disappointed and you don’t have to take my word on that, it’s received well over a million views on social media and the club recently played host to a group of Norwegian visitors who came just to try the box and left very happy! For £12 it is very good value meal especially considering everything is cooked from scratch by Martin Laws including the sauce (which I’d quite like a jar to take away next time!). It’s a thumbs up from me and a meal I’ll happily have again on any future visits to the Rivermoor.
