Bracknell Town won their opening Velocity Trophy group stage tie on Monday night beating Buckinghamshire neighbours Marlow 2-1 at Larges Lane.
On the team sheet were two new names in Marcus Mealing and Ben Mulley, the former starting after coming off the bench on Saturday in the win over Ashford Town (Middlesex) while the later came off the bench in both fixtures.
Mealing is a name many Bracknell supporters will recognise. The centre forward has played for the likes of Marlow, Thatcham Town and Chertsey Town. He featured 14 times for Thatcham in 2015/16 scoring 11 goals.
Mulley is a bit of a prospect having played 23 times for Maidenhead United’s Allied Counties Youth League side last season as well as the championship winning Berks & Bucks County FA under 18 team.
Bracknell manager Sam Lock spoke to Football in Berkshire about his two new signings as well as Tuesday nights win over Marlow that also saw starts for Max Herbert and Ousman Darboe.
Lock said: “It was important to keep the momentum going against a very direct Marlow side. We restricted them to one shot at goal in 90 minutes and saw the game out comfortably. With seven players out injured we rotated the squad round.
“Ben Mulley has performed well for the under 18s and deserved the opportunity to make his debut as has Brooksy [Harry Brooks] for the under 23s. Lots of young players will get opportunities this season if they show the same attitude as these boys.”
Marcus Mealing
On his new striker, Lock said: “Marcus Mealing came in after leaving Combined Counties League Premier Knaphill. He has an opportunity to impress and show everyone how good a player he can be. He isn’t fit yet. That will be the main focus over the next couple of weeks.”
Addressing a question from FiB about Mitchell Parker, Lock said the former Reading City and Hartley Wintney forward hadn’t signed but was potentially someone he would be interested in in the future. Parker is currently signed on again with Reading City in the Uhlsport Hellenic League.
