In the end it wasn’t to be for Ascot United Ladies who missed out on the Southern Region Women’s League Division 1 title on Sunday by two points to New Milton Town Ladies.

The Yellawoman had already compeleted all their fixtures but New Milton had one game remaining and were just a point behind the leaders in second place.

There was certainly room for optimism, New Milton had to travel to third place Barton Rovers needing a win but in the end the visitors won 2-1 and leapfrogged the long time leaders.

United may still earn promotion depending on the make up of division for 2017/18 which will be decided at the league AGM but Darrell Evans side won’t be two disappointed after finishing second bottom in 2015/16 – the turnaround has been remarkable with forwards Amy Woollard and Lucy Holzman finishing as the divisions second and third top scorers.

Woollard and Evans have also been nominated individually for Bracknell Football Awards.

Elsewhere Woodley United finished their season in fifth following a 3-2 defeat at home to Alton.

The Kestrels were behind at half time but hit back through Rosie Page-Smith and Bonnie Messitt but were unable to add to a glorious end of season run that some them pick up eight straight wins, two defeats and one draw in their final 11 games.
