Abingdon United have made it back to the Uhlsport Hellenic Premier Division at the first attempt after a nervy 90 minutes against New College Swindon on Easter Monday.
Abingdon return to the Premier one season after being relegated along with Wokingham & Emmbrook and Milton United at the end of the 2015/16 season.
United edged out third placed Hook Norton by a point on the final day of the season – Norton won their match at home to Woodstock Town 2-1 but missed out on a promotion spot after Abingdon beat New College 2-1.
For a few minutes, it looked like Hook Norton would snatch second place with the scores level at Nortcourt Road until an injury time Jack Clark goal sparked raucous celebrations on the Berks/Oxon border which you can see in the video below.
Abingdon join Fairford Town from the West and Woodley United in the East in making the step up to the Premier Division.
There is still a chance for Hooky to take promotion with a precedent set for three sides going up in Division 1 West at the end of the 2014/15 season when Longlevens, Tuffley Rovers and Lydney United were all promoted along with Wokingham & Emmbrook and Brackley Town Saints in the east.
Earlier in April we released what we thought the Hellenic Premier Division would look like for the 2017/18 season. Do you agree?
