Opening weekend of Bracknell Sunday League rains goals as Raglan lift the cup

The opening weekend of the new Bracknell Town & District Sunday League campaign saw an abundance of goals. Top scorers were Woodley Saints of Division 2 with 7 whilst the highest scoring game saw 9 between Berks County and Wokingham & Emmbrook TMW in Division 1 (5-4).

The traditional curtain-raiser to the season on Friday night, the Dave Scovell Memorial Trophy went pretty much to form with Premier Division Raglan defeating a spirited Silver Birch Reserves of the 3rd Division by 7-1.

All teams finishing in the top 3 of last season won their opening day Premier Division fixtures. Reigning Champions FC Fernhill impressed against newcomers Panthers by winning 6-0. Crowthorne Inn, last season’s runners-up overcame Morale Madrid by 3-2 whilst Finchampstead Athletic came away from Golden Farmer Rangers with a 4-1 win. The other fixture played in the Division saw newly promoted WAB beat fellow newcomers Athletico Forest 2-1.

The four games played in Division 1 saw no fewer than 28 goals scored. Debutants Panthers Reserves got off to a fine start with a 4-3 win away against seasoned-campaigners Winkfield. Goals by Billy Bryce, Ben Poyner, Lee Blackman and Tom McGuire gave Loveman United a 4-0 lead against promoted Bracknell Athletic who managed to pull two goals back, one a wonder strike, the game finishing 4-2 to Loveman. Two teams new to the Division in Ascot Athletic and AFC Crowthorne Reserves shared a 3-3 draw.

In Division 2 a hat-trick for Jamie Burnett helped last season’s Div 3 Champions Woodley Saints to an impressive 7-0 opening day win at home to Ashridge Park Royals. Newcomers Golden Farmer Reserves were left to rue a missed penalty in their 2-3 away defeat to Sandhurst FFC. Siver Birch got the better of Moore Close Manor (4-3) whilst the other game played in the Division finished in a 3-0 win for Winnersh Rangers against Bracknell Corinthians.

In Division 3 there were wins for Finchampstead Athletic A, Bearwood Wanderers, Bracknell Saint-Germain and Winnersh Town. Division 4, that saw 20 goals scored in the 3 games played, resulted in wins for AFC Crowthorne Old Boys, Bracknell Athletic Reserves and Crownwood Dukes.
