Binfield Ladies end season with defeat but Woodley United close on title

Binfield beaten 3-1 by neighbours Ascot United after strong first half and Woodley United are a point from the title and promotion

Binfield Ladies inaugural season ended in defeat to neighbours Ascot United Ladies Reserves in a very delayed Thames Valley Counties Women’s League fixture.

The match had been scheduled as a Binfield home tie but with the pitch unfit for play at 1pm, the two sides arranged a switch to the Yellawomen’s pitch – the game kicking off over an hour late.

Binfield made the earlier running in the game with Charisse Tregear giving the reds a 1-0 lead 20 minutes in.

United came out of the blocks strongest in the second half though, Darcey Young equalising with a well struck goal from 20 yards while Hannah Cornish made it 2-1 shortly after.

This woke Binfield who saw chances at the other end – and pushed centre back Fran Batt up field, however the equaliser didn’t come and Carol Checkley made it safe when a cross rebounded off her and in to the back of the Binfield net.

Elsewhere in Division 2 East it was a disappointing afternoon for Sandhurst Town who saw their game at Harefield United abandoned at half time with the Fizzers 3-1 up.

In the Southern Region Women’s League Chairman’s Cup, Division 1 side Wargrave crashed out after a 9-0 defeat to Premier Division Oxford City. Ascot United’s season ended the previous week with a 5-3 defeat to the same opponents.

Woodley on the brink of success

In Division 1 North, Woodley United require just a point from their final game of the season against Wargrave to be crowned champions.

Marc Surtees side beat challengers Barton Rovers 1-0 on Sunday thanks to a second half Charley Evans goal and can now only be caught by Wargrave who must beat the Kestrels to stay in the race.
