What do you call a manager who’s won your club three promotions in a row and has you on the outskirts of the play-offs and another shot at promotion?
Certainly not a failure, but Southern League Premier Division South side Walton & Hersham would appear to disagree.
Social media has reacted in astonishment as the Swans confirmed the departure from the club of manager Scott Harris.
A statement released by the club, calling Harris ‘the most successful manager of the Swans modern era,’ said: “Upon his appointment to the role in April 2020, Scott outlined a clear vision and strategy to return the club to Step 3 within five seasons. That vision was realised in a minimal possible timeframe of just three seasons, achieving a near-unprecedented third consecutive promotion and subsequent return to Step 3 at the end of the 22/23 season.”
Walton & Hersham’s play-off hopes have undoubtedly been hurt by the late resurgence of Bracknell Town, but with three games to go the Swans we’re undoubtedly still part of the conversation.
Berkshire Football Award nominated Slough Town boss Scott Davies wrote: “Christ almighty. If you’re sackable then what hope have the rest of us got after what you’ve achieved, and as you put it, still get ‘fired’. Unbelievable job you’ve done.”
Several social media commenters have speculated the change might be linked to the availability of former Hungerford Town and Bracknell Town manager Bobby Wilkinson.
Wilkinson recently parted company with Weymouth having performed a minor miracle in keeping the Terras up in the National League South on the final day of last season.
