Football fans in Berkshire have a rare opportunity this Saturday to attend three back-to-back fixtures.
As part of the Hellenic League Groundhop weekend, Saturday’s day has been designated Berkshire day with matches taking place at Mortimer, Taplow United and Woodcote.
The eagle-eyed among you will notice that Woodcote isn’t actually in Berkshire, but just over the border in Oxfordshire. However, it’s only just over the border and only became part of Oxfordshire after the border changes of 1974.
The first game of the day kicks of at 11am where Mortimer host Chinnor at the Alfred Palmer Memorial Grounds. Mortimer have had a good first season in the uhlsport Hellenic League Division Two East and currently lie in 3rd place. This will be their opponents Chinnor’s final game of the season.
The jamboree then moves on down the A4 to Popes Field and Taplow United. The hosts have had a tough league season but have had better luck in the cups, making the Slough Town Cup Final. Taplow will be hosting Buckinghamshire’s Chalfont Wasps with a 2.15pm kick off.
To finish the afternoon it’s back out west to Woodcote Stoke Row where Woodcote will be hosting FC Beaconsfield at the Recreation Ground for a 5.30pm kick off. Woodcote currently lie in 2nd place in the table, though it looks unlikely they will be able to catch runaway leaders Newbury who still maintain a 100% record.
The other Berkshire based club involved in the weekend is Newbury FC who travel to Watlington Town in Oxfordshire for an 11am kick off as part of Easter Sunday’s fixtures.
We are told printed programmes are available at all fixtures, so it’s a rare opportunity for those who indulge in such hobbies to pick up a programme and watch some good football on what promises to be a fascinating weekend.
Full fixture details can be found on the Hellenic League’s website.
