Woodley United Ladies marked a milestone moment for long-serving captain Ellen Surtees on Sunday, presenting the defender with a special ‘150’ shirt.
Surtees, who has played for the Southern Region Women’s Football League Premier Division side since she was 16, was presented with the shirt before the Kestrels game with Abingdon United at Bulmershe Pavillion.
General Manager Mark Rozzier said: “Sunday 5th December 2021 was a milestone for Ellen Surtees, captain of Woodley United Ladies, who was making her 150th appearance for the club. To mark this occasion Ellen, who made her senior debut as a sixteen-year-old, was presented with a club shirt prior to the home Southern Region Women’s Football League match against Abingdon United.
“This is a tremendous achievement by a player who gives so much to the club not just as a player but as a role model to the younger players both in the team and youth section, in particular the u12 girls who she has coached in their early years.”

Speaking to Football in Berkshire’s Abi Ticehurst, in an interview in November 2020, Surtees revealed she was only the latest in a line of Surtees to play for Woodley with her dad (Woodley United Ladies manager Marc) also pulling on the sky blue shirt.
She describes herself as a ‘no-nonsense defender’ who’s “a bit of a sweeper at the back and like my teammates to know I’ll always be there as the last man” as well as enjoying the chance to get stuck in with strong challenges, “especially slide tackles”.
In 2020, Ellen was named Football in Berkshire’s Women’s Player of the Season at the Berkshire Football Awards.
"Ellen has been a crucial player this season, not just as our captain, but a solid centre back too. Defending comes naturally to Ellen but this season she has rocketed up the assist list. Numerous assists from corners and free kicks this season."
