Bracknell Sunday League’s Whitegrove FC out to defend County Cup title

Whitegrove FC are going solo in the Berks & Bucks Sunday Junior Cup as the only Bracknell Sunday League side left in the competition going into the third round on Sunday.

There are three versions of the County Cup for Sunday League sides – the main one being the Intermediate Cup which has FC Fernhill and Finchampstead Athletic Sunday flying the flag, the second is the Junior Cup and the third is the Junior Trophy which Whitegrove won last season.

The greens now compete in the second competition though after winning promotion to the Bracknell League’s first division, and captain Lee Kilmartin (pictured above) believes his side can go all the way again.

‘We’ve got a great chance of winning the competition again’

He said: “We’re really playing well at the moment and have got a great chance of winning the competition again. Whitegrove has a super set of players with some really good signings during the pre season and we were very unlucky against Premier Division Morale Madrid in the last round of the league cup, should of won it [the match finished 3-3 at full time – Morale won in extra time].”

Whitegrove manager Tony Hardy said: “We’re right up for this competition after going out of the League Cup the other week. We enjoyed our cup adventure last season and we’re confident against unknown opposition after two good away wins in the previous rounds.”

Both manager and captain admitted their knowledge of third round opposition Beaconsfield Arms was limited to an eighth place in the High Wycombe Sunday Combination League Division 2 at the time of writing.

The experience of last seasons cup final 4-2 win on penalties against P&IC United penalties 4-2 will give the side – currently seventh in Division 1 but with three games in hand on most sides – plenty of confidence ahead of the long trip to South Bucks, along with the two victories in the competition already this season.
