Isthmian League play-off semi-finalists Ascot United have moved to appoint Gavin Smith as their new boss following the departure of Jamie Tompkins.
The move comes after Tompkins seven year reign that included winning the FA Vase and the Combined Counties League, was brought to an end at the start of the month.
In a statement released by the club, Smith’s reputation for developing young talent was a key factor in his appointment – Ascot have one of the largest youth football pathways in the area.
“Gavin joins us from Badshot Lea, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a strong reputation within the game. Renowned for developing young talent and playing an exciting, attacking brand of football, Gavin is a respected figure whose values we feel align closely with those of Ascot United,” the statement said.

Previously a player with Ascot, but most notably a member of the early noughties Bracknell Town side under Alan Taylor, Smith said: “I’m delighted to have been given the opportunity to manage a club that I have admired as an opposition manager over many years. A club that has had great achievements under Jamie’s management. The foundations in place here makes this a really exciting time for me and I look forward to seeing what the journey brings.”
Elsewhere at the club, it has been confirmed Secretary Ricky Simons is to step down at the end of the month. A statement released on social media said: “It is with sadness that we announce Ricky Simons will be stepping down as Club Secretary at the end of the month. Ricky has been a hugely valued member of the team, and his dedication, commitment, and the many hours he has given to the Club have made a lasting impact. He will be greatly missed, and he leaves with our heartfelt thanks and very best wishes for the future.”
