Binfield were dominant in a first half that really should have yielded a higher half time score than 2-0 on Monday night in their Uhlsport Hellenic Premier Division clash with Burnham at Hill Farm Lane.
Luke Paris appeared to be the only visiting player capable of halting the Moles but as the defender was dragged around the pitch attempting to do just that it was inevitable that chances would fall to the home side and in Ian Davies, Binfield have a striker who will more often than not make the most of those chances.
And it was Davies who opened the scoring from Charley Tuttle’s cross which Burnham goalkeeper Mo Sampat jumped for but got nowhere near and the Moles forward was on hand from three yards out to head in to an empty net.
Davies had had a chance one on one prior to that only for a last ditch challenge to halt the strike, and following the goal Josh Howell was kicking himself for heading wide at the far post after James Knight had fired in a teasing cross that had again eluded Sampat.
Unfortunately for Burnham, the second goal would come from further defensive confusion. Tuttle crossed in a free kick from the right hand side that somehow eluded absolutely everyone and found the back of the net – you can watch it in all it’s glory here.
So Binfield were good for their lead, but Burnham had other ideas in the second half – arguably troubling Henry Craven in the Binfield goal for the first time as Jordan Dondican pulled one back two minutes after the restart but parity was restored on 65 minutes when Sean Moore picked the ball up in the centre and from 15 yards out looped the ball over Sampat.
There was a huge let off for the Moles a few minutes later when Juan Kemp rifled in from distance only to see his shot cannon back off the post but all in all a solid evenings work for Binfield who have lost just one of their last 12 games.
Elsewhere in the Hellenic Premier, promotion chasing Thatcham Town thumped struggling (and we assume still managerless) Highmoor Ibis 6-0 at Scours Lane. Liam Ferdinand hit a hat trick while Shane Cooper-Clark, Tom Melledew and Harrison Bayley got the other goals.
There’s a couple of games still to go this week with Woodley United in the Hellenic Premier and Ascot United in the County Cup against Football League opposition, full details on the fixtures here.
